Finding Data about Deaf People

Group of hands engaged in numbers of one to five in sign language.

It can be challenging to find accurate information about deaf people, especially if we want information about specific groups (e.g., race, ethnicity, disability, gender) or about a particular geographic region. We could attempt to collect our own data, but it can be hard to reach out to enough deaf people to ensure our information is accurate. This is why it can be useful to rely on pre-existing large-scale datasets to get the information we need.

In this module, we review the American Community Survey (ACS) and teach you how to use our data dashboard. The dashboard can be used to show disparities between deaf and hearing people at the national and state levels. Disparities, or differences between groups, are a powerful metric that can be used to highlight inequities and the need to create more accessible programming and opportunities for deaf people.

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Describe some of the information collected through the American Community Survey
  • Navigate NDC’s data dashboard to find specific data about deaf people
  • Access the American Community Survey and Current Population Survey Public Use Microdata Sample files and create custom tables of data

This module is approved for 1 NDC Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Clock Hour and 1 CRC Clock Hour.
