Tanya’s Story: Extended Time for Testing

Extended time on testing, on my tests. For the extended time, since there were only six of us in class, a lot of the students were able to finish the tests within 35 minutes or between 35 to 45 minutes. So after the last student leaves, the instructor would actually give me time and a half of the last person that left, not the time and a half of the class.

The first test took place when the second year of school was ending and it was a knowledge assessment of what we had learned in those prior two years, which was a lot. It was a comprehensive test. I think it was an 8-hour test with 400 questions, I believe.

Another situation happened when a hospital in my area stopped providing interpreters.  The Deaf community was up in arms about it.  I thought the hospital may not understand why interpreters are necessary.

I like to quote Maya Angelou, where she says; “When people know better, they will do better.” That truly describes our approach, of how we address the systems in place that present barriers for us.
