A lot of people have misconceptions. There’s a stigma or assumption that deaf people can’t succeed. We have to prove ourselves often.

I went to Utah for the University of Texas leadership trip. We went backpacking along the Utah trails for about three, four days. So was an interpreter going to backpack with me the entire time? That’s awkward.

How do you teach others about being deaf? People will ask me if I’m deaf. They show disbelief and confusion when I say that I am, because they can hardly believe it.

My accommodations vary depending on the class. If the class is lecture based, with the instructor speaking the whole time and no discussion at all, I use speech-to-text transcription because so much centers around the vocabulary, which is very important.

How do you communicate with people? If they don’t know sign language, then I will write or use my phone to text. Sometimes I can read lips, but I emphasize sometimes. I’m not as good at it as some other deaf people.
