Module Description: Decisions and mandates that affect the lives of deaf people are made every day without involving deaf people. This practice sustains systematic marginalization and barriers to advancement for deaf people in both education and employment settings. The National Deaf Center for Postsecondary Outcomes (NDC) has been working to change that. Through the Engage for Change | local project, community- and deaf-led dialogs have helped grassroots and local leaders strengthen community connections and build systemic change from the bottom to top.

Following the release of the Leading the Way: Eight Strategies for Deaf Communities to Enact System Change, this live panel showcases community members who were part of Engage for Change | local projects in their local communities. This panel is an opportunity to learn more about EFC| local experiences and to discuss the significance of deaf led in systemic change. Participants will gain an understanding of centering deaf people in decision making as well as learn key elements of deaf-led community projects.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

    • Define what centering deaf people in decision making means within projects for systemic change

    • Identify important elements in successful projects led and supported by deaf community members
