Module Description:

Explore how effective note taking can be a powerful tool for ensuring access and inclusion for deaf students in a wide range of learning environments. You will learn about the benefits of note taking services, how they can be adapted for different classroom formats, and the challenges that often arise for both students and disability services (DSS) staff. You will gain practical ideas for recruiting and training note takers, using technology to enhance access, and creating student-centered systems that actually work. By the end, you might want to consider revisiting your current approach and implementing new strategies to strengthen your note taking accommodations.

Learning objectives – Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the challenges deaf students face with traditional note taking and explain how various learning environments affect access to information.

  • Assess and select effective note taking models—such as peer-based, collaborative, or technology-assisted—based on student needs, course structure, and available resources.

  • Design practical systems for recruiting, training, and monitoring note takers that maintain confidentiality and ensure consistent, high-quality support.
