Karla’s Story: Challenges of Hybrid Learning

Currently in my PhD program, I have interpreters. The program itself is hybrid. Hybrid. So it’s part in person and part online. And some of that online means you are writing [signs “emailing”] but part of that is actually Zoom classes. That’s a challenge. That is a challenge.
Most of my professors have been wonderful, helping me figure out what I need to participate either in-person or online class.
I have one professor who forgot to send the Zoom link to the disability services office. So the interpreters didn’t have it. So they couldn’t join but luckily one of the interpreters knew me and had my phone number. They texted me and said [signs “c’mon”] give me some information so I was able to send the link to them, and then after class I told the professor you have to, [signs “in advance”] one week, give it to the disability support office so that they have enough time to give it to the interpreter. They’re not my friends. I mean they’re not people I interact with every day. It’s not my job, it’s your job to give that information to the disability support office and then they will connect [with the interpreter]. He didn’t realize that. So he apologized, said I’m sorry, in the future for the next class send the zoom link to the disability support office ahead of time so that they can link on properly.
