As summer approaches, we at NDC recognize that change is in the air. Students are graduating, getting ready for summer, looking for jobs, and planning for the next phase in their lives. Reflecting on the year that has passed, it makes sense that the time ahead is filled with uncertainty.

These days it can be considered a cliche, but for me, it’s very heartfelt: I sincerely hope this update finds you and your family healthy and safe. As you well know, the National Deaf Center specializes in transitions — the big life changes that prepare us for success and set paths toward bright futures. Now it is time for our own transition.

Vocational rehabilitation (VR) support and services can be an important factor for deaf people in reaching employment goals, pursuing further education, and achieving success after high school. But understanding what’s available and getting through the doors of VR offices can sometimes be challenging and confusing.

In a keynote address to the Collaborative Experience Conference, director of the National Deaf Center on Postsecondary Outcomes, Stephanie W. Cawthon, PhD, calls on parents and educators of deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing children to rethink the strategies they use to empower young adults who are making the difficult transition to life after high school — to go beyond a checklist that helps teens investigate a training program or apply to college, and instead provide a design for life that prepares them to evolve as people, seize opportunities, and respond to ever-changing environments. As VR and RCD Training Requirements Expand, National Deaf Center Provides Support to States and Agencies

On October 15-16, the state of Illinois will gather its Rehabilitation Counselors for the Deaf (RCDs) together for the first time for statewide training that will include a session on what the National Deaf Center on Postsecondary Outcomes can do to help their day-to-day efforts to serve deaf youth and adults in the state.

The National Deaf Center is presenting, exhibiting, and debuting a new resource for families at the 2019 Hands & Voices Leadership Conference on September 20-22, the only conference of its kind devoted exclusively to training family members with children who are deaf to be agents of change.

Deafverse World One: Duel of the Bots launched on September 10, an online choose-your-own-adventure game designed for deaf teenagers to build confidence, learn their rights, and develop skills to succeed in their transition from high school to adult life.
