Leveraging Alliances: NDC presents to NISOD College Faculty & Administrative Members.
National Deaf Center is excited to connect with collegiate members of the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD). NISOD is a membership organization committed to promoting and celebrating excellence in teaching, learning, and leadership at community and technical colleges. This webinar is an opportunity to offer information and resources to increase student success at community and technical colleges.
Co-Director Tia Ivanko, MA, NIC, ADAC, and Strategic Support Coordinator, Diego Guerra’s presentation, Attitudes, and Biases as Barriers for Deaf Students, will introduce how biases, attitudes, and social constructs impact educational attainment for deaf students. Being deaf is not the reason for barriers encountered in school or the workplace, rather, negative attitudes and biases are direct contributors. Deaf students with multiple intersecting identities in particular, such as race, ethnicity, and additional disabilities, may encounter more barriers due to preconceived notions, assumptions, or misconceptions about their abilities. Negative attitudes and biases are pervasive across the education system and marginalize the experiences of deaf students.
NDC believes that to achieve equity for deaf people, a systems lens is essential. A systems lens allows us to examine policies and practices, communication and relationships, as well as attitudes. We need to look at relationships, operations (policies/practices), and attitudes.
This training is an opportunity to examine and begin to dismantle deficit mindsets by exploring how attitudes and biases impact experiences for deaf students. Critical self-reflection, raising expectations, and deepening awareness of structural inequities are stepping stones toward systems change. Participants will have tips and strategies they can apply in their practice to make changes as an individual and as an educator.
If you are a member of NISOD, we encourage you to check out this training on Monday, August 15th from 1:00-2:00 pm CDT. If you aren’t a member, we encourage you to check out the organization at www.nisod.org.
