TuesdayIf you’re heading to SXSW EDU next week, get ready for an exciting session that brings the lived experiences of deaf people into the spotlight! On Tuesday, March 4th, from 4:30–5:00 PM CT, Chase Burton, Media Producer at the National Deaf Center (NDC), will take the stage at the Austin Convention Center (Room 13AB) to share the power of storytelling in advocacy through filmmaking.

Titled Storytelling to Spotlight Lived Experiences of Deaf People, this session will explore how video interviews featuring deaf individuals connect real-life experiences with quantitative research data. Through these compelling narratives, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the barriers deaf people face in education and beyond—while also learning how to be better allies and advocates. The best part? The session will be presented in American Sign Language (ASL) with interpretation and captioning, ensuring full accessibility for all!

Why This Session Matters

Storytelling is a powerful tool—it makes statistics come alive, turns abstract challenges into real, relatable experiences, and fuels meaningful change at every level. At NDC, we know that lived experiences provide the context needed to truly understand the struggles and triumphs of deaf people across the country. Chase Burton’s session will highlight exactly how personal stories can shape policy, shift perspectives, and inspire action.

And for those looking to earn Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit, this session is accredited! So, not only will you walk away with a fresh perspective, but you’ll also gain professional development credit while you’re at it. Win-win!

Don’t Miss It!

If you’ll be at SXSW EDU, make sure to add this session to your schedule. Whether you work in education, advocacy, media, or just love the power of storytelling, this is one you won’t want to miss.
