Root Causes of Gaps in Postsecondary Outcomes of Deaf Individuals

The National Deaf Center on Postsecondary Outcomes (NDC) conducted a root cause analysis of current data and existing literature to identify four underlying root causes that affect postsecondary outcomes for deaf people:

  • Limited access to language and communication
  • Reduced social opportunities
  • Negative attitudes and biases
  • Lack of qualified and experienced professionals

While not all encompassing, these four root causes provide critical foundation for examining systemic factors that underlie postsecondary outcomes for deaf people.
