Mark’s Story. Captioning Online Classes
A white middle-aged bald male wearing a striped polo shirt and a hearing aid sits in an office. Framed posters with “Deaf Education: Beyond the Crossroads” and “Deaf Culture Crayons” are on a table in the background. Family photos are on the wall.
Mark speaks.
Throughout my experience here, coming back to UT in 2013, my request has been respected. They’ve always agreed to my requests. I remember the first class I took was an online psychology class, with like 800 students and it was online, and I worked with the head of the psychology department and the student services office. And they made sure they had captioning available for that online class, and I thought that was great. So that encouraged me to ask for accommodations going forward. So it was a very positive experience coming back to school to have captions added on for a class of 800 students, where I’m probably the only deaf person.

Three logos appear. The first reads “IDEAs that Work” with an arrow drawing a circle from “IDEAs” to “Work” and the words “U.S. Office of Special Education Programs”. The second logo shows a red-and-blue star with text next to it that reads “TA&D”. The third logo shows a blue circle around a tree. In the blue circle are the words “U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.”
